Hawthorn Cottage

An existing weatherboard cottage on a block less than 300m2 provided a unique set of challenges in order to maximise space while retaining the modest proportions and footprint of the original home. The cottage had previously undergone an extension in the 90’s however for the new owners and their two young children, the disconnection between spaces and lack of storage prompted a complete refurbishment, inside and out. The result is a welcoming, light and airy home, with design cues taken from the client’s love of Scandinavian and Mid Century design. One of the most successful elements in the new design is the connection between the living and dining areas to a previously underutilised backyard.
